Vale bounced back from the disappointment of defeat at Troon to record an impressive win over newly crowned league champions Kilsyth Rangers at rainswept Millburn on Wednesday evening. In what was the final home fixture of the season Vale turned on the style with a classy showing that sent the hardy Vale faithful home happy. With the exception of Davie Rogers, the unavailable Toby King and the injured Graeme McKenzie Vale boss Hugh Hamill sent out the side that fell in the Portland Park cup tie. Matty Maclaurin, Tom Fox and Dom Ruane all came in. In fact it was youngster Ruane who shot Vale into a first half lead after 20 minutes when his low 20 yard drive skidded off the sodden surface and beat Dumbarton signing Scott Morrison at his right hand post. |

Half Time 1-0 Vale were playing into a strong wind in the second period as the rain continued to fall making conditions extremely difficult. Midway though the second half Kemp and David Meechan replaced the hard working Ruane and Hunter and right away Meechan should have scored with his first touch when he found himself unmarked as he headed Brown's corner over the bar. Meechans 2nd touch after 72 minutes was hardly any better as he played a return pass off the legs of the referee but he collected the loose ball to sweetly strike a low 25 yard shot under the body of the diving Morrison and into the net. 2 minutes later it was three nil as Meechan skipped past a couple of challenges on the left before picking HUGH WARD inside. Vale's top scorer rounded the defender before despatching the ball into the net for his 25th goal of the season. In the final minute Rangers got some consolation, Ward's cross should have been converted by Mulholland but instead the danger was cleared and the League Champs broke upfield for Carlin to score. On what was a terrible night for football every player deserved great credit for their level of performance with Alan Brown just shading the man of the match award. |
