Abercorn Builders Central District Division 1

With all hope of promotion gone Vale went about this game with no pressure on them, however once again their failure to put away chances almost came back to haunt them.

At times Hugh Hamill's men looked like world beaters as they stroked the ball about, at other times they looked lacklustre as they contrived to gift the visitors two goals as they struggled to cling onto their 1st division place.

After the crazy finish to the Greenock game the previous week Vale recalled Toby King in midfield in place of Hunter. With this being the last Saturday match prior to next week's important West quarter final Vale boss Hamill was taking the opportunity to field the side that will probably play at Troon with the exception of the cup tied David Meechan.

Hugh Ward
23 goals for Hugh Ward

Vale got off to a flying start with the opening goal after only 5 minutes play. Jim Meechan dispossessed a "Shire" attacker, Fox helped the ball out to Alan Brown on the right and from his precise diagonal cross, top scorer Hugh Ward lost his marker to sent a wonderful cushioned volley into the back of the net.

It was virtually one way traffic towards the visitors goal and a neat move involving Lacy and 23 goal Ward presented McKenzie with a clear chance but Thomson pushed away his close range effort after 20 minutes.

5 minutes later Vale added a second goal, McKenzie was out of luck again when the keeper stopped his shot only this time David Meechan following up had the simplest of chances to tap home from close range.

The home side continued to dominate but they were caught out 5 minutes from the break when Cahoon's lob into the area should have been dealt with by Davie Rogers but his hesitancy allowed K. Mooney the chance to head home unchallenged from 2 yards.

Thankfully Vale regained their 2 goal margin after 44 minutes after Thomson saved Meechan's shot at the expense of a corner. Alan Brown took the kick on the left and his right footed inswinger deceived the keeper and ended in the back of the net.

Half Time 3-1.

Vale came out for the second period knowing that they had survived the fright, surely they would have learnt something from this? Again they failed to finish off a poor "Shire" side and as a result they gained confidence and pulled a goal back with 10 minutes remaining.

A hopeful punt into the 6 yard area was taken by keeper Rogers but somehow he let the ball drop from his grasp and K. Mooney couldn't believe his luck as he rolled the ball into the empty net to ensure a nervous end to the match for the Vale support.

Once again Vale were well served by their defence and man of the match ALAN BROWN in midfield.
