Vale got the season off to a flying start with this fine win over local rivals Yoker at Millburn. Vale boss Hugh Hmill gave debuts to young keeper Dave Rogers against his former side, former Dumbarton, Clydebank, Arbroath, Clyde and Cowdenbeath midfielder Toby King and trialist Graeme McKenzie. It took the home side a long time to break down the Yoker defence but the opening goal finally came after 30 minutes when a rejuvenated Scott McKernan met Alan Brown's near post corner to glance a header into the net. Eight minutes later McKernan was sent tumbling in the box by the Yoker keeper and Hugh Ward made no mistake from the penalty spot to give Vale a two goal interval lead. |
