Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 3-2 Vale of Leven
Rob Roy: Gallagher (32), O'Donnell (49), Brown (89)
Vale: Smith (51), D. Meechan (72)
Man of the match: Brian Smith
Adamslie Park. Monday 13th May, 2002. Kick off: 7.00pm
Abercorn Builders Central League Division 1

Vale again showed great character to come back from a two goal deficit to level the match with 18 minutes remaining, unfortunately a hotly disputed free kick awarded to "Roy" in the final minute saw Brown's deflected drive beat Maclaurin for the winner.

Vale started with the same side that had claimed all three points last time out against Blantyre whilst the home side were hoping to end a run of five defeats. The Millburn men looked the better side early on and after only 5 minutes D.Meechan dispossessed Drennan before shooting past.

7 minutes later Meechan was sent tumbling on the edge of the area and Alan Brown's well-struck free kick was fumbled around the post by Smith in the "Rabs" goal. From the resultant corner Wardle saw his netbound header blocked on the line as Vale threatened to overrun the home side. David Meechan passed up a great chance to put Vale ahead after 27 minutes when he pounced on another slip from Drennan and with only the keeper to beat his placed shot was turned around the post by Smith.

After half an hour "Rabs" had their first attempt at goal when Gallagher turned on the edge of the area and his shot was well saved by Maclaurin.

The home side took the lead very much against the run of play after 32 minutes when Ian Smith broke clear of the Vale defence to place a low shot past the advancing Maclaurin.

"Rabs" went further ahead four minutes into the second half when Darren O'Donnell beat Maclaurin from 12 yards when it appeared that the striker was a couple of yards offside.

Vale responded within a couple of minutes. A shot from Alex Lacy was expertly tipped over the bar by keeper Smith. From Alan Brown's flag kick Brian Smith headed home at the back post.

After 55 minutes Deeley was fouled 20 yards from goal and Alan Brown's well struck free kick was turned away by Smith. Vale again came close when Wardle headed narrowly over the bar from Brown's corner and after Boal and Ward replaced Hunter and Wilson Vale were rewarded with an equaliser. Another Brown corner found David Meechan at the near post and his header found the back of the net for a well-deserved leveller.

After 81 minutes substitute Boal was upended in the box by keeper Smith who got out of jail when the referee amazingly waved play on.

Further drama was to come in the final minute when "Rabs" broke upfield and won a hotly disputed free kick right on the edge of the area. Willie Brown took the kick and his well hit shot took a wicked deflection on the Vale defensive wall to beat the diving Maclaurin.

On the night the best side lost but again the inability to convert chances when on top proved to be Vale's downfall.

Team: Maclaurin; Lacy, Wardle, J.Meechan, Goodwin; Hunter (Boal), Brown, Smith, Deeley; D.Meechan (McKernan), Wilson (Ward). Unused subs: Dennison & Dalrymple.
