Vale of Leven 1-1 Kilsyth Rangers
Vale: Wilson (51)
Kilsyth: Logan (18)
Man of the match: Kevin Goodwin
Millburn Park, Monday 29th April, 2002. Kick off: 6.45pm
Abercorn Builders Central League Division 1

Once again Vale made things hard for themselves as they gifted their opponents a goal and missed countless chances. In a tough physical encounter both sides deserve credit for putting on an exciting match in monsoon like conditions.

The home side were without the injured Bryan Boal but Ross Hunter returned to the side after his own injury worries. The home side opened strongly and could have been three up within the first 15 minutes.

However, as has happened on numerous occasions, Vale were made to pay the price as they lost a soft goal after 18 minutes. Keeper Maclaurin totally miskicked a through ball allowing Logan the simplest of chances to slot the ball into the empty net.

Vale almost lost a second goal after 39 minutes but a great interception from Deeley averted a certain goal.

Vale drew level 6 minutes into the second period when Maclaurin's long clearance was controlled by David Meechan and his clever through ball found Dougie Wilson who fired home from close range.

Kilsyth were looking dangerous on the break and after 63 minutes Glasgow sent a shot flashing wide of the far post. Four minutes later Wardle was short with a header back to Maclaurin and top scorer Glasgow seemed certain to score but Maclaurin redeemed himself with a great blocking save. After 67 minutes Hunter headed on a Deeley long throw and from point blank range Wilson blasted the ball over the bar.

Vale had strong appeals for a penalty turned down after 76 minutes when Meechan's drive hit a defender's arm but a minute later it was Vale who rode their luck when Maclaurin collided with Glazier with the visitors screaming for a penalty. Vale's final chance of the night saw keeper Morrison come out bravely to block from Meechan after the striker latched onto McKernan's pass.

The result keeps Vale out of the relegation zone but they really need to be chalking up wins if they are to ease the pressure. Best for Vale were Alex Lacy, David Meechan, Jim Meechan, Alan Brown and man of the match Kevin Goodwin.

Team: Maclaurin, Lacy, Wardle, J.Meechan, Goodwin; Hunter, Brown, Smith (McKernan), Deeley; Wilson (Ward), D.Meechan.
