Vale of Leven 1-3 Shotts Bon Accord
Vale: Wilson (85)
Dunipace: Wallace (18), Wilson (49, 81)
Man of the match: Jim Meechan
Millburn Park, Saturday 20th April, 2002. Kick off: 3.00pm
Abercorn Builders Central League Division 1

Having boasted about their super home record Vale lost their 2nd consecutive league game at Millburn on Saturday against Shotts Bon Accord. The result leaves Vale in 4th bottom spot in the table, their worst placing at this vital stage of the season since 1985. With 9 games remaining Vale find themselves in danger of relegation to the bottom division.

Vale boss Hugh Hamill made a couple of changes to the side that failed against Dunipace, out went Dalrymple and McKernan and in came Goodwin and Deeley. The home side started well and after only 5 minutes a long clearance eluded the Shotts defence but Ward could only shoot straight at Colquhoun. A minute later David Meechan fired a low shot wide of the far post.

The visitors edged ahead after 18 minutes when they broke quickly up the right despite Vale's appeals for offside. Wilson crossed and Maclaurin did well to block Scott's effort but the ball broke kindly to Ian Wallace and he fired the ball home from 12 yards.

a late consolation
goal for Vale

The Lanarkshire side could have increased their lead when Wilson again broke on the right, this time his driven cross was tipped around the post for a corner. Sinclair then wasted a great chance when he shot wildly over the bar.

Vale finished the first half on top but had little to show for their efforts. D.Meechan shot over when he could have played Ward in beside him and then Ward somehow managed to hit the upright from point blank range after a Jim Meechan header landed at his feet.

Vale knew that they were still in with a chance but that became slimmer 4 minutes into the 2nd half when, with no danger, Maclaurin sliced a clearance on the bumpy surface straight to Kevin Wilson and he could hardly believe his good fortune as he rolled the ball into the empty net.

The game was over as a contest after 81 minutes when Wilson grabbed his second goal of the afternoon with a great shot from 20 yards that beat the diving Maclaurin.

With 5 minutes remaining Vale substitute Dougie Wilson grabbed a consolation goal when he beat 3 players on a mazy run through the middle before firing home from 12 yards. Minutes later fellow sub McKernan was hauled down in the area but amazingly the referee waved play on.

Best for Vale on a disappointing day were Brown, Wardle, Lacy and man of the match Jim Meechan.

Team: Maclaurin; Lacy, Wardle, J.Meechan, Goodwin (Gow); Boal (McKernan), Brown, Smith, Deeley: Ward (Wilson), D.Meechan.
