Vale of Leven 1-1 Carluke
Vale: D. Meechan (37)
Carluke: Gardner (16)

Man of the match: Kevin Goodwin
Millburn Park, Saturday 12th January, 2002. Kick off: 2.00pm
Abercorn Builders Central League Division 1

Vale dropped two points against Carluke Rovers at Millburn on Saturday. Although the visitors looked a much improved side than the one which defeated Vale at Loch Park earlier in the season it was still a case of Vale failing to capitalise on the many chances they made.

Once again Vale were hampered with injuries ruling out Boal, Jim Meechan and Wilson. Scott McKernan came in to replace the injured Boal otherwise Vale fielded the side that beat Glencairn on 15th December.

In near perfect conditions the visitors were first to threaten when G. McFarlane broke on the right and his cross seemed bound for the unmarked Donaldson until a timely interception from Lacy averted the danger.

At the other end John Ritchie broke clear through the middle after 15 minutes and as he raced in on goal he was tripped from behind by Moffat just outside the area. Amazingly the referee waved play on.

With Vale still complaining Carluke broke upfield and when Meechan's clearance landed at the feet of G. McFarlane, he promptly crossed for the unmarked striker Gardner to send a downward header into the net.

Vale had a slight chance after pass was slipped to Ward but his close range shot was blocked for a corner. A neat move up the left saw Ritchie release Ward and his powerful shot from the angle of the area was brilliantly tipped over by keeper P. McFarlane.

The home side were robbed of an equaliser after 30 minutes when after Goodwin's cross had come off a defenders head, John Ritchie stuck the ball into the net in spectacular fashion. Once again however the referee amazed everyone by ruling offside.

Ross Hunter was unlucky after 35 minutes when his shot narrowly missed the target but two minutes later Vale managed to draw level. Hunter was bundled over on the edge of the area and from the free kick David Meechan struck a sweet shot low into the net.

Two minutes into the second half Alan Brown saw his free kick tipped over the bar and from the corner Wardle's netbound header was blocked by Simpson. Another Brown corner after 61 minutes was cleared off the line before Ward's threaded pass let in Deeley but he mishit his left foot shot tamely at the keeper.

After 68 minutes Vale missed a great chance to take the lead. Wardle crossed from the left but Ross Hunter, unmarked, headed wide when he seemed sure to score. With Vale well on top they replaced Ward with Dalrymple after 75 minutes and within 5 minutes he had blocked a netbound header on the goal line.

Vale's attacks continued and both Ritchie and Meechan wasted good opportunities to grab a winner. At the other end Maclaurin made a great block to keep out Donaldson.

Best for Vale were Maclaurin, Hunter, Meechan, Wardle, Lacy and man of the match Kevin Goodwin.

Team: Maclaurin; Goodwin, Lacy, Wardle, Deeley; McKernan (Fox), Brown, Hunter, D. Meechan (Gow); Ritchie, Ward (Dalrymple). Unused subs: Renton & Boal.
