Vale of Leven 4-1 Rutherglen Glencairn
Vale: D. Meechan (16, 72), Ritchie (51), Ward (65)
Glencairn: McLaughlin (62)

Man of the match: David Meechan
Millburn Park, Saturday 15th December. Kick off: 1.45pm
Abercorn Builders Central League Division 1

Vale continued their impressive home form with yet another fine win at Millburn.

Second placed 'Glens' came expecting an easy 3 points against a Vale side rooted to the foot of the table due in the main to their dismal away form. At the end of the day it turned out to be a comfortable win for Hugh Hamill's men who were never tested by a very poor Glencairn side.

After last weeks cup win over Maybole Vale were forced to make more changes with the influential Jim Meechan ruled out with Goodwin deputised. Up front Hugh Ward displaced Scott McKernan who dropped down to the bench.

Two goals for David Meechan.

After a fairly even opening period Vale forged ahead after 16 minutes with another extraordinary goal from hot shot David Meechan. Keeper McGovern's poor kick out was collected on the right touchline by Hugh Ward and his diagonal ball into the path of Meechan on the left was met first time by the young striker and the ball fairly flew into the net from 20 yards.

'Glens' had a good chance to draw level after 27 minutes when Aytons clever free kick into space caused panic in the Vale defence until Hunter hooked the ball to safety. At the other end David Meechan sent over a great cross from the left but there were no takers and when 'Glens' broke swiftly Maclaurin raced from his area to clear.

At the start to the second period Vale had a good opportunity to add to their lead when Ward made a great run down the left and after teasing the defence his cross into the 6 yard area seemed destined for the head of Brown or Boal but in the end they put each other off and the ball was cleared.

However the home support were cheering after 51 minutes when Ward released Meechan on the left and from his perfectly flighted cross John Ritchie rose to head down and into the net for his 2nd goal in a week.

Vale allowed the visitors to get back into the game after 62 minutes when Maclaurin punched a free kick for a corner and when the ball came into the area centre half McLaughlin swivelled to hook the ball into the net at the back post.

Within 3 minutes Vale restored their two goal margin, Meechan from the left touchline played a long diagonal ball to Hugh Ward wide on the right and with Boal making a decoy run inside the experienced front man drove a low shot towards goal. After taking a wicked deflection the ball ended up spinning up and over the keeper into the net.

If young David Meechan's first goal was a bit special then his second and Vales fourth was every bit as good. Vale ripped 'Glens' apart with some fine interpassing involving Ward, Brown and Boal saw the ball rolled into the path of Meechan on the left and after taking a couple of touches he drove a low shot into the net to ensure victory.

His reward for that goal was to be replaced by Dalrymple and further changes saw Renton and McKernan replace Ritchie and Ward.

On a day when Vale had no failures and everyone deserved special praise for effort and entertainment value, top scorer David Meechan was man of the match for two goals and two assists as Vale moved up 4 places in the table.

Saturday's win was Vale's 9th win out of 11 at Millburn, the others being draws with Musselburgh and Shettleston. No fewer than 33 home goals have been scored, surely good value for money for the hard to please Vale faithful.

Team: Maclaurin; Goodwin, Lacy, Wardle, Deeley; Boal, Brown, Hunter, D. Meechan (Dalrymple); Ritchie (Renton), Ward (McKernan). Unused subs: Smith, Wyllie.
