Vale crashed out of this competition at the quarter final stages for the second year in a row. This time it was high flying premier division side Lanark United that put paid to Vale's hopes of early silverware.
With Vale's numbers badly depleted due to injury, it was a major disappointment that the experienced Hugh Ward refused Vale's resigning offer and was declared ineligible for this important match. He was promptly made available for transfer.
Last season's First Division winners had most of the opening 45 minutes and scored twice to give them a strong advantage going into the second half of this quarter final tie. First of all a powerful Peacock header from a dangerous corner on the right put them in front. Then Bell was given three attempts at goal from the right hand side of the box to make it 2-0.
In the second half Vale came into the game more and pulled a goal back through David Meechan, although the Lanark bench and players were incensed after the ball looked suspiciously out of play on the left hand side. Vale played on however and Meechan finished the move to make it 2-1.
Part of the reason for the throw in not being given was that the linesman's view was obstructed by the Lanark management & subs, who persisted in standing near to the line despite repeatedly being told to move back.
Vale kept the pressure on as the half wore on without finding the breakthrough. Renton came closest with a looping header, with his back to goal, from a Brown cross. It fell just over the bar however and Lanark held on to go into the semi finals to face Larkhall.
Team: Maclaurin; Lacy, Wardle, J.Meechan, Dalrymple; Hunter (Renton), Brown, Gentile, Deeley; Boal, D.Meechan. Sub not used: Goodwin.
