Vale made heavy weather of this win over relegated Port at Millburn, twice coming from behind to level before securing all three points with a much improved 2nd half showing.
Port took the lead after only 10 minutes when Dalrymple conceded a penalty after downing McKay just inside the area. McKay himself took the kick and beat Maclaurin low at his right hand post. Vale were level within two minutes when Brian Deeley burst the net with a powerful drive.
Vale presented Port with a second after 25 minutes when Maclaurin dropped a long free kick and Kean hooked the ball into the net from the edge of the area. Once again Vale fought back and restored equality when Tom Fox fired a stunning shot high into the net from the angle of the area.
Vale took the lead for the first time after 70 mins when Deeley had the simplest of tasks of tapping the ball into the net from close range after Fox cut the ball back from the goal line. Boal missed at least three clear cut chances to secure Vale's win before being replaced by David Meechan who himself raced free to score in the last minute.
Team: Maclaurin; Goodwin, Lacy, Wardle, Dalrymple; Fox, Brown, Smith, Deeley; Ward (D. Meechan), Boal (Montague).
